Car Remapping
Remapping rewrites the software in your car’s ECU so the engine runs to its own potential rather than to a factory compromise built around cheap fuel, weak servicing and markets you will never drive in. Done properly it is measured, reversible, and written for your specific car. This page covers what it is, what it costs, what you actually gain, and how to tell a real remap from a file flashed on a driveway.
What It Actually Is
Every engine that leaves a factory runs to a set of maps — lookup tables in the ECU that decide fuelling, ignition timing, boost pressure and torque limits at every combination of load and rpm. Those maps are not set to what the engine can do. They are set to survive the worst case: poor fuel quality, missed services, extreme climates, and a warranty the manufacturer has to honour in every market it sells in.
A remap replaces those tables with ones written for your car and your conditions. Nothing is added, removed or drilled. The hardware is untouched — the same turbo, the same injectors, the same gearbox — and the original file is kept so the car can be returned to standard at any time.
The gap between factory and potential is largest on turbocharged engines, which is why a modern turbo diesel or petrol typically finds around 35% more power and 40% more torque on Stage 1 while a naturally aspirated engine finds far less. See what happens during a remap for the step-by-step.
What You Gain
Measured on our own 4WD dyno, not claimed from a brochure.
Around 35% more power and 40% more torque on a typical turbocharged Stage 1, proven with before and after dyno runs.
Learn moreMore torque low down means fewer downshifts, easier overtaking and a car that pulls from where you actually drive it.
Learn morePersistent fault codes, limp modes and emissions warnings traced and dealt with properly at ECU level.
Learn moreStage 1 needs no hardware changes at all. Stage 2 goes further with supporting modifications.
Learn moreOn a ZF8 or DSG, gearbox software sharpens shifts and raises torque limits to match the engine map.
Learn moreWe keep your original file. The car can be put back to standard whenever you want it.
Learn moreWhat It Costs
A custom Stage 1 dyno tune is £449 including VAT for most BMW and VAG cars. BMW B58 and M models, Audi RS and the Porsche petrol range are priced higher because the work and the software cost more. Gearbox tuning starts at £325, and booking an engine map and a gearbox map together takes £125 off the pair.
That price is the whole job: reading the ECU, writing the map for your car, baseline and final dyno runs, the road test and a printed before-and-after graph. There is no separate dyno fee and no "from" price that changes when the car arrives.

The Part That Matters
This is where remapping companies genuinely differ. The cheap version is a generic file bought for your engine code and flashed in at the kerbside in twenty minutes. Nothing is measured, so nobody — including the person doing it — knows what the car made before or after, or what the fuelling and temperatures did under full load.
We write the map for your car on our own V-Tech 4WD-linked rolling road, logging AFR, boost and temperatures live while the car is loaded, then prove the result with final runs. Because all four wheels are driven, xDrive, Quattro and 4Matic cars are measured properly rather than guessed at on a single-roller rig.
The comparison in full is on dyno vs driveway, and remap vs tuning box covers the plug-in alternative.

Remapping is rewriting the software maps inside your car’s ECU — the lookup tables that control fuelling, ignition timing, boost pressure and torque limits. The factory sets them conservatively to cope with poor fuel, missed servicing and every market the car is sold in. A remap replaces them with maps written for your car, without changing any hardware.
A custom Stage 1 dyno tune is £449 including VAT for most BMW and VAG cars. BMW B58 and M models, Audi RS and the Porsche petrol range are higher. Gearbox tuning starts at £325, and engine plus gearbox booked together saves £125.
On a typical turbocharged engine, around 35% more power and 40% more torque on Stage 1. Naturally aspirated engines gain considerably less because there is no boost to work with. Our figures pages list real before and after numbers for every engine we tune, so you can check your exact car rather than take an average.
Yes, when it is done within the hardware’s limits and actually measured. We log air-fuel ratio, boost and temperatures under full load on the dyno while the map is written, which is the only way to know the engine is happy. A generic file flashed in without measurement is where the risk lives.
Yes. We keep your original file, so the car can be returned to standard at any time.
Yes. A remap is a modification and should be declared, the same as wheels or suspension. Not declaring it can invalidate a claim.
It is a same-day job. Most cars are with us around 3 to 4 hours covering the ECU read, the map, dyno runs and a road test. Locked post-June-2020 BMW and Audi ECUs need bench unlocking first and are booked as a 4 hour slot.
Stage 1 works with the car exactly as it is — no hardware changes. Stage 2 goes further and needs supporting modifications, which differ by fuel type. Our Stage 1 vs Stage 2 guide covers what each one needs.
