Is A Remap Worth The Drive From The Wirral?

If you've been offered a remap on your own driveway, here is what the drive gets you instead. We measure the car first, write the map for that exact car while it runs on the dyno, log it under full load and measure it again. You go home with a printed graph of both runs, and your original file is kept.

BMW and the VW Group brands (Audi, VW, SEAT, Skoda, Cupra) are our speciality, with Porsche and Ford vans on the price list too. A Stage 1 is normally a same-day job; the exception is an Audi or VW Group ECU that has to be sent away to be unlocked, which keeps the car for 3 to 4 working days.

Getting Here

Routes From The Wirral To Birchwood

Off-peak times by area. Rush hour on the M56 and M6 adds more.

Toll-free: join the M53 at your nearest junction and follow it south to the M56, east to the M6, then north to junction 21 and the B5210 and A574 into Birchwood. Some sat navs use junction 21A and the M62 instead, leaving at junction 11, two minutes from us. It's 37 to 44 miles from Birkenhead.

By tunnel: Queensway from Birkenhead or Kingsway from Wallasey takes you into Liverpool, then out along Edge Lane to the M62. It's about 25 miles from Birkenhead, but you pay the toll and start on city streets. From West Kirby and Hoylake it saves no real time, and the Mersey Gateway doesn't help from anywhere on the peninsula. Neither route has a Clean Air Zone charge.

Measured on our rollers: a G30 530d xDrive made 266.5 bhp before and 330.1 bhp after Stage 1 with xHP ST3 (see the sheet). A Mk8 Golf R made 324.1 bhp before and 409.7 bhp after Stage 1 plus a TCU tune (see the sheet).

A 4WD linked V-Tech rolling road in our own workshop, used for the baseline, every adjustment and the final proof run.

The front and rear rollers are mechanically coupled, so xDrive, quattro and 4Motion cars are loaded through all four wheels. Few workshops round here have one, which is why customers regularly come from North Wales, Stoke and Leeds. Just curious what your car makes now? A set of three dyno power runs with a printout is £150 on a 2WD car and £200 on a 4WD.

Reserve the dyno online for a £50 deposit and settle the balance on the day. Moving it is free with 48 hours' notice.

Nothing is tuned until it passes a full health check. Baseline runs then record the starting point.

Map & Log

Your map is written and refined while boost, air fuel ratio and temperatures are logged live at full load.

Prove It

Proof runs, a logged road test, and a printout of both power curves to take away.

With an hour's drive each way, waiting is usually easier than going home. The lounge has free Wi-Fi, hot and cold drinks and Netflix, and Birchwood shopping centre and the station are close by too.

Mobile Or Dyno

Why We Don't Remap On Your Driveway

We don't do mobile remapping, on the Wirral or anywhere else. On a driveway a map can be loaded, but nobody can measure the car beforehand, hold the engine at full load while the map is refined, or prove the gain afterwards. The full comparison is in dyno tuning vs driveway remapping.

Two Minutes Off The M62

Find us at Unit 20 Trinity Court, Warrington WA3 6QT. Leave the M62 at junction 11 and we're two minutes away (five from junction 21A of the M6), and you can park outside the unit. Saturday appointments are available, which suits anyone who works through the week. Call 01925 819002 or book online.

Questions From Wirral Drivers

How far is Birchwood from the Wirral?

Outside rush hour, about 45 to 50 minutes from Bebington, 55 from Heswall and an hour from Birkenhead, Wallasey, West Kirby and Hoylake, toll-free on the M53, M56 and M6. Allow extra for peak traffic.

Is it quicker to go through the Mersey Tunnel?

From Birkenhead or Wallasey it can be, at 45 to 50 minutes at best via the Queensway or Kingsway Tunnel and the M62, but you pay the toll and cross Liverpool to reach the motorway. From West Kirby and Hoylake it saves no real time.

Will you come to my house in Heswall to remap the car?

No, and that applies everywhere, not just the Wirral. Every car is tuned at our Birchwood workshop, since the map is written and verified on the 4WD dyno.

Is it worth waiting while the car is done?

Usually, yes. A Stage 1 typically takes 2 to 4 hours, so with an hour's drive each way it rarely makes sense to go home and come back.

I have a post-2020 BMW or Audi. Can you still tune it?

In most cases, yes. BMW and Audi ECUs have been locked at the factory since around June 2020. On cars built 2020 to mid-2026, a BMW unlock is done in-house in the same appointment for £100 on top of the tune, adding no time. An in-house Audi or VW Group unlock makes it a 4-hour half-day, and some engines go away to be unlocked. A BMW or Audi built from June 2026 has a newer lock, so we can't tune those for now.

Do you remap diesel vans?

Yes. Stage 1 for a Ford Transit, Transit Custom, Transit Connect or Tourneo costs £449, and a 2.0 EcoBlue Transit Custom is mapped to 210 bhp and 520 Nm. We've also had a VW Transporter T6 2.0 TDI 140 on the rollers: 143.1 bhp before, 183.1 bhp after Stage 1.

Can I have the gearbox tuned on the same trip?

Yes, and from the Wirral it saves a second journey. Do both in one booking and you save £125 on the pair; the gearbox itself is £325 or £385 depending on the car.
