Will Your ECU Need Unlocking?

A locked ECU can change how long the car stays with us.

BMW: Same Visit

BMWs and Audis built from around June 2020 to mid-2026 have a locked ECU. On a BMW we open it in-house during your tune appointment; it adds £100 and no extra time.

Audi & VW Group: Your Choice

Locked Audi and VW Group ECUs can be opened in-house for £449 with your tuning, with no extra time, or sent away for £399 with your tuning while you leave the car here for 3 to 4 working days. A few V6 and V8 engines can only go that way.

June 2026 Onwards: Not Yet

A BMW or Audi built from June 2026 can’t currently be tuned, because its newer lock can’t be opened yet. Check the build date first.

Locked ECU or not, Stage 1 normally takes 2 to 4 hours and is finished the same day. Our free BMW lock checker uses only the public DVLA record, and the ECU unlocking page lists every engine we cover, with the unlock prices.

BMW: xHP

xHP’s first stage (ST1) takes out the factory torque limiters on the ZF8; ST3 is the stage chosen by the majority of our customers. E and F series cars pay £325. The £385 price covers G series, M cars, the X1 (F48) and 2 Series Tourers. Among xHP dealers worldwide we rank second, and the software can only be installed with the car here.

VAG Automatics

For Audi, VW, SEAT, Skoda and Cupra, our TCU calibration costs £325 and covers ten gearboxes: DSG and S tronic units running from the DQ200 up to the DL800, plus the ZF8 and the Aisin AL1000.

We have measured one car of each model on our dyno with gearbox software added. A 420d Convertible went from 180.2 to 230.3 bhp with Stage 1 and xHP stage 3. With Stage 1 and a TCU calibration, a Touareg V6 TDI made 331.2 bhp from 286.8, a Golf GTD Mk7.5 230.4 from 188.9, and an Audi Q7 4M 329.3 from 271.1.

An Audi Q7 3.0 TDI built from around June 2020 to mid-2026 is one of the send-away units, so plan on leaving the car for 3 to 4 working days while its ECU is opened. That send-away unlock is £399 with your tuning.

We don’t offer mobile remapping in Macclesfield or anywhere else. Measuring the car before and after needs our dyno, so every car comes to Birchwood.

We check the car is healthy, record where it starts on our V-Tech 4WD linked dyno, write its calibration, then run it again to show the change. You take home the printed graph, and we keep your original software in case you want the car standard again.

The western route follows the A537 to Knutsford and joins the M6 at junction 19, heading north. The northern one takes the A523 and A555 to the A34, meets the M60 at junction 3, and follows it to the M62, where you leave at junction 11. Both take about the same time and neither is tolled.

Locks, Gearboxes & The Drive

What is the drive time from Macclesfield?

Around 50 minutes outside rush hour for the 30 or so miles, via the A537 and M6 or the A34 and M60. Prestbury is closer to 45, and Rainow about 55.

Do you offer a mobile remap in Macclesfield?

No. Every car is tuned at our unit in Birchwood, on the dyno, so the result is measured.

My BMW is locked. Will I need a second trip?

No. A BMW ECU is opened here during the same appointment, for £100 on top of the tune, and it doesn’t add time.

Can a locked Audi be done in one day?

Usually. A locked Audi ECU can be opened in-house for £449 added to the tune, with no extra time. Otherwise the ECU is sent away for £399 added to the tune, and the car remains here for 3 to 4 working days. That is the only route for the 3.0 V6 TDI, the 2.9 and 3.0 V6 TFSI and the 4.0 V8. Should the gearbox be done at the same time?

Booking engine and gearbox together saves £125 and a second drive. xHP for a BMW is £325 or £385 depending on the model, and S tronic or DSG calibration costs £325.

How do I pay?

What do I take home?

A printed before and after dyno graph for your car. We also save its original software, so it can be returned to standard later.
