The BMW F Series 20d comes with two different engines. Pre-2015 models generally carry the N47 engine, available in two power levels, the 163 BHP Efficient Dynamics and the 184 BHP version. Post-2015 cars use the B47. Both engines are paired with either the 6-speed manual or the 8-speed ZF8 automatic transmission.

ZF8 Gearbox Tuning
The ZF8 transmission is controlled by the Getrag TCU. In stock format the box works well, but we can transform it to behave in a much sportier fashion, improving shift points, shift times, gear display logic, and the maximum torque limiter. These boxes are easily capable of reliably handling 900 Nm of torque.
Post-2015 F Series 20d models use the B47 engine. This modern platform responds excellently to tuning, with Stage 1 delivering similar headline figures to the N47 while maintaining all factory systems.

ZF8 Gearbox Tuning
The same ZF8 / Getrag TCU combination. We can improve shift points, shift times, gear displays and the maximum torque limiter. B47-equipped boxes are reliably capable of handling 900 Nm of torque after calibration.
We tune the newer 20d BMWs too. The G20 and G21 320d, G30 and G31 520d, G01 X3 20d, G22 420d, G42 220d and the F40 118d and 120d all use the B47 diesel with a Bosch MD1CS001 ECU. They go on the same 4WD dyno as the F Series cars above and get a map written for that car on the day.

BMW and Alpina cars built from June 2020 have an encrypted ECU. We unlock it on our own bench the same day, rather than posting it away, and tune the car on the same visit. The unlock adds £100 to your tune and no extra time to your appointment. Check your reg free → · More on unlocking →

BMW's X Drive system cannot be safely run on a standard non-linked rolling road. Damage to the transfer box will result. We see many companies unplugging transfer boxes or disabling the 4WD system via software, this is far from ideal and often produces massively over-read torque figures. All our 20d tuning is conducted on our X Drive-safe 4WD linked dyno.
No matter what stage of tuning is selected, all cars are custom tuned on our mechanically linked (X Drive safe) 4x4 rolling road. Before any tuning work commences, your car is placed on the rolling road, full diagnostics are carried out and data logs taken to establish the health of the vehicle. DPF regeneration and minor adaptations are all carried out before tuning where required at no additional cost.

How much power will a Stage 1 remap add to my BMW 20d?+
Our Stage 1 maps are custom-built on our in-house 4WD dyno and tailored to your exact BMW 20d, never a generic off-the-shelf file. Is remapping my BMW 20d safe and reliable?+
Yes. We tune strictly within the safe mechanical limits of your BMW 20d's engine and gearbox, monitoring temperatures, pressures and torque loads across multiple dyno pulls. We've spent 14+ years tuning these platforms, so our maps prioritise long-term reliability alongside performance.
Will a remap affect my warranty or insurance?+
A remap is an aftermarket modification, so it's the owner's responsibility to declare it to their insurer. Our maps are fully reversible, we keep your original factory file and can return the BMW 20d to completely standard whenever you need, for example before a main-dealer visit.
Is the remap reversible?+
Completely. Your original factory software is saved before we start, so your BMW 20d can be returned to stock at any time.
Will tuning improve my BMW 20d's fuel economy?+
Many owners notice improved MPG, especially on a steady motorway cruise, because the engine makes its torque more efficiently and needs less throttle for the same progress. Driving style is the biggest factor, drive it the same and economy often improves; enjoy the extra performance and the savings will simply be smaller.
How long does it take, and do you tune on a dyno?+
Most Stage 1 tunes are completed within a few hours; allow up to a day for combined ECU and gearbox work. Every BMW 20d is mapped on our in-house 4WD dyno in Warrington, never on the road, so the result is measured and consistent. You're welcome to relax in our customer waiting area while we work.
Can you tune a G-Series 20d built from June 2020?+
