The N47 is the 2.0 diesel in every BMW 18d and 20d from 2007 until the B47 took over between 2014 and 2016. A 184bhp car comes out at around 230bhp and 500Nm, mapped on our own 4WD dyno.

The 163bhp Efficient Dynamics versions land in the same place as the 184bhp cars. Stage 2 takes most 184bhp cars to around 240bhp and 520Nm: what it needs depends on the car, so ask us.

BMW’s N47 arrived in 2007, replacing the M47, and was the 2.0 diesel in every 18d and 20d until the B47 took over model by model between 2014 and 2016. BMW sold it at up to 184bhp, 200bhp with the Performance Pack, which is why a map finds so much in it.

Timing chainsEarly N47s are known for timing-chain wear at the back of the engine, so it pays to have one looked at by someone who knows it. Every car gets a health check and fault scan before we touch the map, and if something is wrong you get told. We don’t map over a problem.

N47 or B47? Your reg will tell us.

BMW swapped the N47 for the B47 model by model between 2014 and 2016, so two cars that look the same can have different engines. We tune both, for the same price. Put your reg into the checker and it shows the engine, figures and price for your exact car.

N47 tuning questions

How much power does a Stage 1 remap add to an N47?

A 184bhp 120d, 220d, 320d, 420d, 520d or X3 20d goes to around 230bhp and 500Nm on Stage 1. The earlier 177bhp E-series cars go to around 220bhp and 420Nm. Stage 2 takes most 184bhp cars to around 240bhp and 520Nm.

Is my 20d an N47 or a B47?

BMW replaced the N47 with the B47 model by model between 2014 and 2016, so the build date matters. Anything earlier is an N47, and every G-series 20d is a B47. Put your reg into our checker and it will tell you which engine you have and what it makes.

My N47 has a timing chain rattle. Can you still tune it?

We would want to look at it first. A chain that is already worn needs sorting before any tuning, and if that is the case we will tell you rather than map over it. Every car gets a health check and fault scan before we start.

Does an N47 need its ECU unlocking?

No. The N47 went out of production years before BMW started locking ECUs in mid-2020, so it goes straight on the dyno with no unlock charge.

Can you tune the gearbox too?

On an automatic, yes. Our xHP gearbox software gives quicker, firmer shifts and raises the torque limits to match the new map. It is £325 and is done in the same visit.

Will it affect my warranty or insurance?

A remap is a modification, so you need to declare it to your insurer. We save your original file before we touch anything, so the car can go back to standard whenever you need.
