BMW B48 · 2.0 Turbo Four-Cylinder Petrol

BMW B48 Stage 1 Remap
Up to 270bhp from a 20i

The B48 is the 2.0 turbo petrol in almost every four-cylinder BMW built since 2016, from the 120i to the 530i, and BMW leave a lot of it on the table. We map it on our own 4WD dyno, written for your car on the day rather than pulled off a shelf.

Every price on this page is a full custom dyno tune

Not a generic file bought in and flashed over the port. Your BMW B48 is strapped to our in-house 4WD dyno and the map is written for your car, on the day, from its own data.

  • Health check firstWe look the car over and read the fault memory before we touch anything. If something is wrong, you get told. We don't map over a problem.
  • Live data loggingBoost, ignition timing, fuelling, knock and temperatures all watched in real time while the car is running under load.
  • Custom calibration on the dynoThe map is built and adjusted run by run against what your engine is actually doing, not what a file supplier assumed.
  • Before and after printoutYou leave with the graph: your standard figures and your tuned figures, measured on the same rollers, the same day.

Every B48 car, and what it makes

Stage 1 figures are typical results for a healthy, standard car on our dyno. Prices are inc VAT for Stage 1 custom dyno tuning, and the gearbox column is our xHP ZF8 software on top.

What you’re actually buying

Stage 1

£449

Custom map written on the dyno for your car. No hardware needed, around two hours, fully reversible. A 20i lands at 260–270bhp, a 30i at 290–310bhp.

+ xHP gearbox

£325–£385

The ZF8’s shift maps were written for standard torque. Rewriting them is the difference between a fast car and a sharp one. £325 on F-series, £385 on G-series.

Locked ECU

+£100

Cars built from around June 2020 need the ECU unlocking first. We do it on our own bench, same day, in the same visit.

The B48, briefly

BMW’s B48 replaced the N20 2.0 turbo during 2016 in the 1, 2, 3 and 4 Series, and it has been the four-cylinder petrol in almost everything since: twin-scroll turbo, direct injection and the same modular design as the six-cylinder B58. The 20i and 30i are the same basic engine at two power levels, which is a big part of why a 320i or 420i responds so well to a map. Our own customer cars have gone from around 175bhp to between 270 and 284bhp.

Read the builds: a G20 320i, an F31 320i xDrive Touring and an F36 420i Gran Coupé. Six-cylinder petrol? See our B58 page.

B48 or N20? Your reg will tell us.

BMW moved the 120i, 220i, 320i and 420i from the N20 to the B48 during 2016, so two cars that look the same can have different engines and different ECUs. We tune both. Put your reg into the checker and it shows the engine, the figures and the price for your exact car.

G-series B48? Your ECU is probably locked.

BMWs built from around June 2020 leave the factory with an encrypted ECU, which catches a lot of G20 320i and 330i, G22 420i and 430i, G30 520i and 530i, X3 and Z4 owners, and it is why some places turn these cars away. We unlock it here on the bench rather than posting it off. Drop it in, drive it home the same day.

Went in this morning to have a custom stage 1 on my G20 320i. Dan was very professional and welcoming when I came in, had it done within 2 hours and the results did not disappoint! I would highly recommend 📈

Took my car to DC for a custom map to smooth out the bottom end release a bit more power from it, they did that and more, my B48 engined 320i is now quicker, smoother and with miles less lag low down, DC have woken my car up and it’s now a dream to drive. Can’t recommend this service enough, very professional. If you’re thinking about getting it done, get yourself to Warrington and get DC to sort it. You won’t be disappointed!

Had my bmw 420i remapped and gearbox software on 29/08/25. Customer service was great, and any questions I asked they were more than happy to explain. Friendly atmosphere and good set up. The car feels totally different. It not only has made a huge jump in power and torque but it’s general drivability is so much better, smoother power delivery. They even accommodated a few more things I asked if we’re possible, it was no trouble. Great team. Great set up, great service.

B48 tuning questions

How much power does a Stage 1 remap add to a B48?
A 184bhp 120i, 220i, 320i, 420i or 520i typically goes to 260 to 270bhp and up to 420Nm on Stage 1. A 30i, at 245 to 258bhp as standard, goes to 290 to 310bhp and up to 470Nm. Our own customer cars, a G20 320i, an F31 320i xDrive Touring and an F36 420i Gran Coupé, made between 270 and 284bhp on our 4WD dyno.
Is my 320i or 420i a B48 or the older N20?
BMW moved the 120i, 220i, 320i and 420i from the N20 to the B48 during 2016, so the build date matters. Anything G-series, such as a G20 320i, G22 420i or G30 520i, is a B48. We tune both engines. Put your reg into our checker and it will tell you which engine you have and what it makes.
Does my B48 need its ECU unlocking first?
If it was built from around June 2020 onwards, yes. The ECU is locked from the factory and has to be unlocked before anything can be written. We do that on our own bench the same day, which adds £100 to your tune. Cars built from June 2026 use a newer lock that can’t be opened yet.
Is the B48 strong enough for 270bhp?
BMW sell the same basic engine at 245 to 258bhp in the 30i, so a 20i at 260 to 270bhp is not asking anything unusual of it. We health-check the car and data-log it on the dyno before and during the map, and if something looks wrong we tell you rather than mapping over it.
What does gearbox tuning add on top?
On a ZF8 automatic the shift maps were written for standard torque, so once the engine makes more they become the weak link. xHP rewrites them: quicker shifts, less hesitation and a raised torque limit. It is £325 on F-series cars and £385 on G-series.
Will it affect my warranty or insurance?
A remap is a modification, so you need to declare it to your insurer, and it can affect a remaining manufacturer warranty. We save your original file before we touch anything, so the car can go back to standard whenever you need.

Figures are typical results for a healthy, standard vehicle on our dyno. Your car’s actual output depends on its condition, fuel quality and any supporting modifications. Prices shown are for Stage 1 custom dyno tuning inc VAT; locked ECUs carry an additional unlocking charge, confirmed when you book.
