Should You Remap Your BMW G20 320d?

8 July 2026 · DC Remapping UK

The G20 320d, BMW’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel 3 Series from 2019 onward, is one of the most common cars through our workshop. It leaves the factory with around 190 bhp and 400 Nm, which is fine… but leaves a lot on the table. So should you remap it? For most owners the honest answer is yes, but there’s one catch specific to the G20 you need to know about.

What you’ll actually gain

A custom Stage 1 dyno tune on a B47 320d typically takes it from ~190 bhp / 400 Nm to around 225–230 bhp and 490–500 Nm, every car is mapped and proven on our dyno, so the exact figure is specific to yours. But the headline numbers aren’t really the point. What you feel day to day is:

The G20 catch: a locked ECU

Here’s the important bit. BMWs built after June 2020, which is the vast majority of G20 320ds, have a locked, encrypted ECU. A lot of tuners simply can’t work on them, and you should be wary of anyone offering a cheap plug-in OBD flash on a locked car.

We bench-unlock these in-house, so it’s no problem. These BMW ECUs are quick to open on our own bench, so it no longer makes your appointment any longer — we unlock, read, tune and re-seal the ECU properly on the day. It’s the right way to do it, and it keeps everything reversible.

Automatic? Don’t forget the gearbox

Almost every 320d is an automatic (the ZF 8-speed). Pairing your engine tune with an xHP gearbox tune sharpens the shifts, lets the box handle the extra torque, and adds launch control and custom drive modes. Do both together and you save £125 on the pair.

Is it safe, and what about warranty?

Every tune starts with a full health check, we only ever tune a healthy engine, and it’s a custom map built for your exact car, not a generic file. It’s also fully reversible: we save your original file and can return the car to standard at any time. On warranty and insurance our advice is always to be upfront, declare a remap to your insurer, and be aware a tune can affect a manufacturer warranty. We’re happy to talk it through honestly.

So, should you?

If you’re keeping the car and want it to drive the way it arguably always should have, a properly done Stage 1 on a G20 320d is one of the best-value upgrades there is. Done right, health check first, unlocked and mapped in-house, proven on the dyno, it’s safe, reversible and genuinely transforms the car.
