BMW X5 40d G05: ECU Unlock, Stage 1 + xHP Stage 3, 405bhp & 843Nm

This 2022 BMW X5 xDrive40d (G05) came in for our Stage 1 custom dyno tune for its B57 3.0 twin-turbo mild-hybrid diesel, with an xHP Stage 3 calibration for its ZF 8-speed gearbox.

ECU unlocked in-house first

Built after June 2020, this X5 has a locked ECU, so it can’t be read or tuned through the OBD port as it comes. We unlocked it in-house on our own bench, saved the original file, then carried straight on with the calibration.

The numbers

On the baseline run it made 335.0bhp and 727Nm. With our calibration and xHP Stage 3 it made 405.9bhp and 843Nm, with 356.8bhp at the wheels. That is 70.9bhp and 116Nm more:

More torque than an X5 M50d

The gain is not just at the peak. Tuned, this X5 holds over 800Nm from around 2,350 to 3,250rpm, carries more than 100Nm extra from 2,400 to 4,700rpm, with up to 140Nm more in the mid-range, and stays above 400bhp from 4,050 to 4,650rpm. For reference, the G05 X5 M50d makes 760Nm from the factory. xHP Stage 3 lets the 8-speed handle the extra torque properly, with quicker, sharper shifts.

How it was done

Diagnostics and a health check first, then baseline runs on our 4WD linked dyno with live data logging. The engine calibration was built from there with repeated runs, the gearbox was flashed with xHP Stage 3, and the final pulls verified the result. No generic files: a calibration written for this car, proven on our dyno.
