xHP Gearbox Tuning Explained

If you've got a BMW with the ZF 8-speed automatic gearbox (the "ZF8" fitted to most modern BMWs), an engine remap is only half the story. xHP gearbox tuning transforms how that gearbox behaves, and paired with a Stage 1 tune, it's one of the biggest upgrades you can make to how your BMW drives.

What xHP actually does

xHP reflashes the transmission control unit (TCU) to change how the ZF8 shifts. The headline changes:

• Faster, firmer shifts, noticeably quicker and more decisive gear changes, especially in Sport.
• Higher torque limit, the factory software limits torque to protect the gearbox; xHP raises that limit so it can safely handle a tuned engine's extra torque.
• Firmer clutch pressures, held on to protect the gearbox under higher torque and stop it slipping.
• Launch control & full manual mode, proper hold-in-gear manual control, and launch control on many models.
• Custom shift maps, relaxed and smooth in Comfort, sharp and aggressive in Sport.

Why it matters with an engine tune

A Stage 1 remap adds torque, often a lot of it on a diesel. The stock gearbox software isn't set up for that extra torque, so it can shift softly or slip to protect itself. xHP raises the torque limit and firms up the shifts so the gearbox makes the most of the engine tune and stays protected. That's why we recommend xHP alongside Stage 1 on ZF8 cars.
