VW Golf R Tuning Guide

The Golf R is one of the all-time great all-weather performance cars, 4Motion grip, a punchy EA888 turbo four, and huge tuning potential. Here's what a remap does for it.

Typical Stage 1 gains

On a custom Stage 1 map, a Golf R typically goes from around 300–320bhp to 360–390bhp (depending on the generation), with a big torque increase and much sharper response, all from software. The extra mid-range makes the car feel a class quicker.

Stage 2 and beyond

The EA888 has serious headroom. With a downpipe, intake and intercooler, Stage 2 takes it further again, a platform that rewards proper, dyno-developed tuning.

Tune the DSG too

The Golf R's DSG gearbox benefits hugely from gearbox tuning alongside the engine map, faster, firmer shifts, launch control and a higher torque limit to handle the extra power.
