VW Crafter 2.0 TDI Camper: ECU Unlock + Stage 1, 188bhp & 409Nm

16 October 2026 · DC Remapping UK

This 2022 VW Crafter 2.0 TDI is a fully fitted-out camper with a six-speed manual gearbox. It came in for our Stage 1 custom dyno tune, to give it the pulling power a heavy camper needs.

ECU unlocked first

Its Bosch MD1 ECU was locked, so it couldn’t be read or tuned through the OBD port as it came. We sent the ECU away to be unlocked, refitted it, then did the stock runs and live data logging before building the tune.

The numbers

On the baseline run it made 105.9bhp and 310Nm. With our Stage 1 calibration it made 188.4bhp and 409Nm, with 153.3bhp at the wheels. That is 82.5bhp and 99Nm more:

More power than VW’s top factory Crafter

The gain is across the rev range, not just at the peak. Tuned, this Crafter holds over 380Nm from around 2,100 to 3,500rpm, where the standard van was already dropping away, with more than 150Nm extra from around 3,000 to 3,500rpm, and it stays above 180bhp from around 3,200 to 3,900rpm. For reference, VW’s most powerful factory Crafter, the 2.0 TDI 177PS, is rated at about 175bhp.

For a loaded camper that means far easier work on hills, and with the six-speed manual it holds each gear much better low down, with the torque coming in smoothly.

How it was done

Diagnostics and a health check first, then baseline runs on our dyno with live data logging. The calibration was built from there with repeated runs, and the final pulls verified the result. No generic files: a calibration written for this van, proven on our dyno.
